Some years ago, before my military service kicked off, I was feeling sorry for myself about this insignificant thing or that - honestly can't remember what it was, but it was evident to my dad that I was in a bit of a funk and he tried to offer a bit of perspective.

"My son," he said, "things might seem bad right now, but your circumstances can always be worse. You could be stuck in the ground, in a hole full of water."
